Did you know that different fires require different fire extinguishers? It depends on what kind of fuel the fire is burning. At Clean Earth Restorations we see a lot of fire damage in our fire restoration work and we think that it’s a good idea to remind everyone about the different kinds of extinguishers.
There are 4 main types of fire extinguishers, and they correspond to the type of material fueling the fire. Keep the kind of fire extinguisher on hand that matches the what what burn in your surroundings (paper, grease, etc). The 4 types are:
- Class A: for fires involving paper, wood, trash or other solid combustibles
- Class B: for fires involving flammable or combustible liquids
- Class C: for fires involving electrical equipment
- Class D: for fires involving certain ignitable metals
What kind of fire extinguisher should you have in your home office? It would be a good idea to have both Class A and Class C extinguishers, in case you have either a paper- or a computer-based fire.
What kind of extinguisher should you have in the kitchen? A Class B extinguisher will stop flames from a grease fire.
Some home extinguishers are labeled A:B:C, which means they can be used on all 3 types of fires. Make sure and read the label before you buy.
