Although California is the Golden State, it has also been in constant droughts for the past decade. Temperatures seems to be getting higher and higher each summer, periods between rainfall are growing longer and longer, and certain cities within the state have put into affect water conservation rules and laws to help limit the amount of water being wasted in the state. November of 2019 was one of the driest on record, which is unusual for that point of the year. When the next official drought comes, it is good to know some tips on how to conserve water.
1. Install a rain barrel on your property.
Rain barrels can catch rain run-off from the roof of your home. This water can be filtered and used for a myriad of different purposes. Additionally, some cities will offer rebates for doing this!
2. Keep a bucket of water in the shower.
This may seem odd, but it can help drastically reduce water waste in your household. Use a bucket to collect cold water coming out of the shower head while you are waiting for it to heat up. This saved water can be used to water plants, flush toilets, and more.
3. Look into greywater systems.
A greywater system is a system that taps into appliances such as your washing machine, and re-purposes the used water for other uses on your property, such as watering plants. Look into your city’s guidelines and advice on implementing one of these systems.
