Chances are learning to upkeep upholstery was not one of the lessons you learned when you were a kid. If you want to keep your furniture as long as possible, and make your investment in them worthwhile, it’s a good idea to know what to do to keep them in shape. At Clean Earth Restorations in San Diego, we can offer you these simple upholstery cleaning recommendations.
First of all, as you might expect to hear from us, there is no substitute for professional cleaning once every 12-24 months. Manufacturers recommend it because pro’s have better equipment, as well as specialized knowledge of textiles, cleaning agents, and their interactions. Do you know what kind of material is covering your arm chair? Are you sure a water-based agent won’t damage that antique Italian sofa?
Second, regular maintenance at home is critical, especially if you have pets and/or children in your home. To keep dirt and dust from infiltrating the fibers and to the core of the furnishings you need to:
- vacuum cushions and frames once or twice a week
- punch the dust out of cushions (outside) once or twice a month
- wipe wood furniture weekly with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water
- wipe spills immediately
- use spot cleaning agents on small stains, according to manufacturer label on the furniture. Labels will usually be marked “W” (spot-clean the fabric using foam from a water-based cleaning agent, such as a mild detergent, or a commercial nonsolvent upholstery shampoo), “S” (spot-clean the upholstery with a mild, water-free solvent or dry-cleaning product. Use sparingly and in a well-ventilated room. Never use a water-based solvent cleaner, which could cause spots or excessive shrinkage), “WS” (spot-clean using either a water-based detergent or solvent-based upholstery cleaner), or “X” (only vacuuming or light brushing, no cleaner is safe).
Regarding professional cleaning, furniture and fabric manufacturers recommend that consumers not wait until severe soiling occurs before cleaning because the greater the soiling, the less the likelihood of restoring the fabric’s original color, appearance and texture and the greater adverse affect on indoor environment quality.
