These days it seems like the weather is all over the map, so to speak. While California and the West endure rampant wildfires, places like Colorado and Missouri are dealing with severe flooding. It’s too bad we can’t get these two phenomena together to cancel each other out! Unfortunately disasters are sometimes unavoidable, but you can take precautions, and possibly minimize the effects of flood damage in San Diego. We’ve talked several times on the blog about how to take precautions against accidental and wild fires. We’ve talked about precautions to ward off accidental flooding, but we’ve never talked about what you can and should do in the case of a natural flood.

3 Tips to Prepare for the Rain!
Big rain is headed our way this weekend! According to Fox 5 News, the “storm will drop up to 3 inches of rain in coastal and valley areas, 3 to 5 inches in the mountains and up to an inch in the deserts. It could cause flash flooding and other road hazards through Sunday.” Clean Earth Restorations, experts in flood restoration in San Diego County, offer you a few simple tips to help you prepare for the rain.
Get Prepared For Rainy Season
- Check your rain gutters. A simple peek over the edge of your gutters will give you an idea of how well they can handle the huge amount of rain that is going to be pouring through them in the next day or so. Take out anything that blocks the water from reaching the downspout, and run hose water into the spout to flush out debris. Overflowing rain gutters can cause water damage to your building’s fascia and siding, as well as compromise the building’s foundation.
- Find out where to get sand bags in your neighborhood, and pick up a few. If you don’t think you need them, at least know where to find them if you change your mind. Your city hall can usually inform you where to find the bags.
- Know where to go for important weather information. The National Weather Service issues warnings and alerts about the weather. Bookmark this San Diego County page on your smartphone or computer and check from time to time to see if your area is affected. Also make sure and listen to local TV and radio stations regarding road closures and conditions. Mission Valley is notorious for flooding and road closures are common. NEVER attempt to drive through a road closed for flooding, even if you believe you can make it through.
