“Repairing fire damage”. Do those words strike fear in your heart? You’re not alone. Those are words no home- or business- owner ever wants to have to Google!
California is facing its driest year in state history and we are only a few months away from the hot season.
Cal Fire started reminding property owners in JANUARY (several months earlier than average years) to maintain the recommended 100 feet defensible space around their properties.
What is defensible space?
Defensible space means clearing out highly flammable materials, such as dry brush, from within 100 feet of your home and other structures. This greatly increases the chances your home/buildings will survive a wild fire. It also creates safer conditions for firefighters battling a fire. And it happens to be the law.
Cal Fire offers these tips on creating and maintaining your defensible spaces:
- Clear all needles and leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters.
- Trim branches six feet from the ground.
- Landscape with fire resistant / drought tolerant plants, that require little water
- Remove branches away from roofs and 10 feet from the chimney.
- Use trimming, mowing and powered equipment before 10 a.m., and not on hot, windy days.
- Keep wood piles and flammable materials at least 30 feet from the home.
