In the San Diego County, we have officially moved to the point where we are starting to open back up again. The county has just approved retail businesses to reopen to the public, albeit under certain guidelines dictated by the County’s Safe Reopening Plan. Here we’ll give you an overview of those guidelines and the best ways to stay safe as the county and the country start to reopen.
Something to note is that individual states have created their own guidelines to reopen their economies. These plans can be subject to change so it is important to stay updated with your local guidelines. If you own a business and have questions about reopening and best practices, you can email: COVID19BusinessQuestions@sdcounty.ca.gov
Resuming Operations
It is important to take the proper reopening steps if you are reopening a building that has been unused or unoccupied for a prolonged amount of time. Stagnant pipes can potentially create hazards for those returning to the building. Hazardous to be aware of include microbial hazards such as mold and Legionella. Legionella is the primary cause of Legionnaires’ disease, a very serious type of pneumonia that is typically contracted by inhaling small water droplets that contain Legionella bacteria. These water droplets can easily become airborne, and can develop from most water sources in a building that has been shut down or that has seen reduced operations. It is important to take the proper steps to flush the buildings pipes and plumbing before reopening and reusing these facilities.
Something equally as important as we open back up in the midst of a pandemic is to clean and disinfect work areas thoroughly and often. If your business has been unoccupied for less than 7 days in a row, you should disinfect the premises as the virus could potentially be present on surfaces. If your business or building has been unoccupied for more than 7 days in a row, you should clean the premises as normal. The virus should not be able to survive on surfaces for that extended amount of time. However, for best practices, it is always best to clean and disinfect, regardless of the time period that has passed since the building has last been active. When it comes to disinfecting and cleaning hard surfaces, such as plastic, metal, and glass, please consult the EPA’a list of approved products to use against the COVID-19 virus (https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2). When it comes to cleaning soft surfaces, such as leather, carpets, rugs, seating areas, and more, we recommend using this list of approved products from the EPA (https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n- disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2).
However, for best practices it is best to consult your local cleaning professionals. Here at Clean Earth Restorations, we aren’t here to tell you whether or not if things are ready to reopen.
