With more sunny days coming out in San Diego, more and more perfect beach days are appearing. As great as dipping your feet in the sand feels, the feeling of getting sand out of carpets can be extremely frustrating. It’s coarse, rough, irritating, and it gets everywhere! If you have kids, you know that they can often forget to clean their feet or shoes after a long beach day, turning your carpets into small sandy shores. So how can you get sand out of your carpet? Whether it’s sand from the beach or playground, we’ve compiled some tips for you!
Tips for Removing Sand From Carpets!
Don’t Wet Your Carpets
We have found some people’s first reaction to cleaning is to wet the area with cleaning products. In the case of sandy carpets, this is not the choice you want to make. Wetting the sand in carpets will enclose and soak the sand particles deeper into the carpet’s fibers, causing the sand to be even harder to remove. Instead opt for more dry removal tactics.
Vacuum as Soon as Possible!
You may be very tired after a long beach day, or playing with the kids at the playground, but don’t let removing the sand from your carpets be a thing that you will “get to later.” The longer that sand sits in your carpet, the more time it will have to make its way to the base and the longer it will have to be stomped down. If you notice sand in your carpets, act as soon as possible.
The Magic of a Hand Brush
Hand brushes are wonderful tools in situations like sandy carpets, especially carpets that have long fibers. Be careful when using stiffer brushes on carpets, as you do not want to damage your carpet in the process of cleaning. Gently brush the areas to loosen up sand that has dug its way into your carpet. Massaging the area with the brush, go over the sandy area of the carpet a few times. After this, you can vacuum up all of the sand you have pulled out.
Wet/Dry Vacuums
Wet/Dry vacuums are great at removing clumps of sand that have found their way onto your carpet. Wet/Dry vacuums are fantastic at removing particles and tiny objects from your carpets. If you do not have one, you can rent one, or call your local carpet cleaning service to do it for you.
Removable Rugs and Carpets
These have the easiest path to removing sand, because you can take them outside to deal with the problem. Remove the rug or carpet from your house, careful not to spill sand onto your non-removable carpets, and set up an area to clean. You’ll be able to hit the rug/carpet and loosen up any sand this way. Remember to hit from the underside of the carpet, sending the sand outward, rather than beating it into the rug/carpet. After you have removed the sand, and loosened up what was hidden deep in the fibers, you can now vacuum up and finish cleaning.
Tips for Preventing Sandy Carpets
Brush Yourself!
Investing in a brush to leave in the car or outside your home is a great idea. Use this brush to wipe the sand off your skin. A lot of homes by the beach have showers or accessible hoses to wash themselves off after a day out at the beach, we recommend brushing first and showering after you have removed most of the sand from your skin. Have a second brush that you can use for shoes and other clothing items, we find it is best to have separate skin and shoe brushes.
Hairier people may find that the sand stick in their hair and is hard to remove with just a brush. Apply some talcum power or corn starch to your body, and the sand will be much easier to remove.
Remember to remove clothing articles caked in sand and shoes before entering the home. Preventing sand from coming into your home is the best way to prevent sand from entering your carpets. This will save you a lot of headache (and money) later in the summer.
