What the EPA recommends before professional help arrives: If you spot mold, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends fixing the plumbing leak or moisture source first, then drying all surfaces completely. Hard surfaces can be scrubbed with water and detergent, but porous materials like carpet or ceiling tile that have been affected may need to be removed. Avoid painting or caulking over mold, and if the affected area is larger than about 10 square feet, the EPA recommends bringing in a professional.
