Water damage can come in all forms, shapes, and sizes, and none of it is good. Kitchen Sink Pull-Out Faucets
This is one that often goes unnoticed. Many people don’t often think of checking the pull-out sprayer portion of their faucets. It is not uncommon for the pull-out portion to become slightly unscrewed from normal user over time, which can cause small amounts of water to leak underneath the sink. This can cause water damage to the cabinet or underneath, and to seep into other structures in the home. Often this goes unnoticed until mold is discovered.
Leaking windows can sometimes be tough to spot, especially in San Diego where we only experience rain a few times a year. However, not only can water get into the house through a leaky sill, it can also seep through the sill into the wall. This moisture, if left to settle, can cause mold and extensive damage to the home. Look out for paint peeling near the window sill, or rotting wood around the window. If either of these are noticed around any windows, call your local professional immediately.
Washing machines can often be culprits of leaks, especially older machines. Often they are hidden from immediate view and are stored in an area of the home with very little foot traffic. Not only do you want to check your washing machine hoses for leaks to ensure water isn’t leaking without you noticing, if a hose bursts it can send a tremendous amount of water flowing inside your home at a very fast rate. If your machine has a rubber hose, consider replacing it with a stainless steel hose. It is good practice to inspect your washing machine hoses 2-3 times a year for leas or cracks, and to get them replaced every 3-5 years, even if they are not showing signs of leaks.
Not all of us in San Diego use fireplaces, or even have them. However most homes are equipped with a vent for heat and gasses to escape the house. If the flashing is not water tight (the sealing around the chimney), water can get into the roof, causing mold and rot. It is good practice to regularly check the interior area where the chimney comes through. If you notice any water marks, call your local professional immediately.
