Water damage is never a good thing for a home owner, and it can come in many shapes and forms. It can be obvious, like a flash flood, or a backed up sink or toilet; or it can be more discreet, and go unnoticed up until it is too late. For this reason, we’ve created a list of types of water damage that you as a home owner should be aware of. If you’re in the middle of a water damage emergency, call your local water damage restoration and remediation company.
Washing machine and appliance hoses
Appliance hoses are big culprits when it comes to water damage. Often they are hidden out of view, and they are not top of mind when it comes to household maintenance. However, if a hose blows, it can end up bringing a large amount of water in and around the home. It is advised that rubber hoses get replaced with stainless steel ones, and that they get replaced every 3-5 years depending on how much they are used.
Chimneys
Well, specifically the chimney “flashing”. The flashing is the sealing material that surrounds the chimney on the roof of the house. If not water tight, moisture can leak through and cause problems in your roof. Check the areas around the inside and outside of your home for any signs of unwanted moisture.
Pull-out faucets
This may seem as a surprise to some, but pull-out faucets can become loose. With constant use, the head of the sprayer can become unscrewed enough to allow water to leak out, sliding down the hose and underneath the sink. This can damage the cabinetry, and more if left unattended for too long.
Window frames
Leaky window frames are not at all unusual (especially in older houses). And in a place like San Diego, where it rains about 2 times a year, it can be hard to tell if there is a leak in your window sills. However, if you do notice a leak, make sure to call a professional right away. Water can get into the interior of the wall, and can cause extensive and expensive damages if left unattended.
