There are many different types of carpet available to you. It is up to you to decide which is best for your home. In this article we’ve outlined a few common types of carpets and their different attributes. Some carpets are best for comfort, while others are purpose driven. And some can even be more for aesthetics.
Where to Put Carpet
While every home is different, carpet typically goes in certain rooms and not others. The most common places to have carpet in your home is in the bedroom, with the second most common area being extra rooms, like a recreation room or home office, and in the living room. These are areas where you are meant to relax and be comfortable. Soft carpets under your feet can amplify that experience. Rooms that usually don’t have carpet include the bathroom and the kitchen. Dining rooms and entry ways to the home also typically are not great places for carpet, due to the high volume of traffic on them and the possibility of spills.
Types of Carpet
There are two main types of carpet: cut pile and loop pile.
Cut Pile
For cut pile, Saxony is a common option to find. You’ll find Saxony in most homes. Saxony is defined by the ends of the carpet fibers being cut very evenly, creating a smooth appearance. These fibers tend to be around a half of an inch high. Saxony is more of a plush carpet due to its luxuriously soft feel.
Textured carpets is another style of cut pile. The fibers of the carpet are twisted and then cut, creating a textured, more casual feel. The twists also makes it easier to clean spills.
Frieze cut pile carpets have more of an erratic pattern to them. The fibers can curl in all different directions, which makes it easier to hide footprints. This type of carpet can come with longer fibers, typically known as a shag pile carpet style. While this type of carpet can be very comfortable, it can also absorb spills well, making it more difficult to clean.
Loop Pile
Of the loop pile options, Berber is found to be the most common. Loop pile carpets are made of fibers that are made into loops, making the carpet more durable and stain resistant, although reducing the amount of cushion you’d get from a cut pile carpet. Berber loops are typically made of shorter fibers that are densely looped together, making it seem smooth.
Level loop pile carpets are also made of shorter carpet fibers, and tend to be a bit stiffer. However, the stiffness increases durability, making this pile ideal for high-traffic areas.
Multi-level loop carpets are designed to be more aesthetically pleasing, typically made with designs woven in. The loops are not all symmetrical, making the carpet look patterned. While the patterns and variances might not seem very noticeable at first, they can make a big different on how the room as a whole will look.
Although these carpet styles vary in how they look and feel, most can be maintained with regular vacuuming and quick attention to any spills.
