Don’t let this be your neigborhood! State drought conditions and this heat wave add up to extra wildfire season danger for San Diego. Fire damage is NOT one of the things you want to add to your upcoming holiday check list. You can help protect your home, business, and neighborhood by making sure you’ve done the following simple things:
- Cover your building’s vents with 1/8″ metal mesh to prevent ember intrusion. Embers can float long distances, even miles, before landing and lighting new fires. Prevent them from landing inside your structure.
- Clean out dry leaves and debris from the roof and rain gutters. They are food for fire. Screen or enclose the gutters to prevent plant debris accumulation in the first place.
- Keep a fire extinguisher and tools such as a shovel, rake, bucket and hoe available in your garage for fire emergencies.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Don’t put off doing simple maintenance and precautionary steps to lessen the risk of a wildfire getting its fiery grip on your neighborhood.
